Virtual Book Week at SPH
18-August-2021
SPH Lippo Village Book Week
Last year, our Junior School holds the long-awaited Book Week virtually! The theme for this year is “Reach Deep into Reading”. Despite this difference in doing Book Week, students still showed great excitement for this event.
Starting on November 30, 2020, they had Mystery Character #1 where they had to guess a book character based on clues given. The next day, the Book Week schedule was “Move to Read” and students built their own “reading forts” while enjoying a book reading session by our teachers, including Mr. Mike, the Junior School Principal.
One of the most awaited activities in Book Week is Character Day & Parade, where teachers & students wear costumes according to a book character. We can see how everyone was highly enthusiastic and they were very creative & all-out! We thank parents who also have made the effort to help their children with their Character Day costumes.
On the 4th day, they held Pajamas Day where students & teachers got cozy in their pajamas & read their favorite books. On the last day of JS Virtual Book Week, we have a special event which was the Author’s Talk. We invited 4 children’s book authors from different countries: Grace Chong (The Philippines), Tina Cho (Korea), Astrid Sugandi (Indonesia), and Luis Gaitmaitan (The Philippines). They did a reading session and shared their passion for writing with students from Kindy up to Grade 6. We are very much inspired!
SPH Pluit Village Book Week
Through this event, we continue to raise our community’s awareness of the importance of books. Books and stories will always have a special place in our learning!
This year SPH Pluit Village’s annual Book Week was a bit different: Book Week went virtual! Our book week was held from October 19-23, 2020. We tied it into this year’s theme and made the slogan “read to thrive” then shared different ways we thrived through reading different stories.
Our Book Week activities included:
- Day 1: Book Week Launch
- Day 2: Book Art Day
- Day 3: Pajama Day & Fort-building Competition
- Day 4: Guest Reader
- Day 5: Whole School Assembly & Character Day
The event went smoothly with each grade participating in their own way! We made some fun videos to help promote book week as well as changing the name to OBW (Online Book Week) which I think helped carry good momentum. We gathered some pictures from students’ homes and put them together as a slideshow at the end of the week. Throughout the weeks leading up to book week, we had a reading competition called “read-a-thon” which also motivated the kids to read more.
Reading really brings out the imagination and creativity within the students. It also helps with their language development and vocabulary. Even though we may not be able to go to many places due to quarantine, we can access a whole new world through books. Mason Cooley said, “Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are,” and Stephen King said, “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” Let’s keep reading and let our imaginations wander!
